WHOLE BODY PET/CT EXAM

How it's done?

You should not eat or drink anything for 6 hours before PET scan. Because the intravenous substance is usually similar to glucose, your blood sugar levels will be checked before the exam. You will wait for 45-60 minutes on a comfortable chair in a specially appointed room after intravenous injection of small amount of substance. You are encouraged to drink plain water as much as you like until the time of the scan and limit your active actions (such as walking) and other activities (talking). Then the technologist will position you on the exam table, and give you instructions to remain still for 30 minutes.

When the total scan is finished, the computers will produce images for the radiologist to review the quality of images. In some cases, there may be need for additional - late shooting.

Once the total scan has been performed, you may resume daily activity. Even though the FDG will quickly leave your body, you can expedite the process by drinking plenty of water after your scan is complete.

Patients at a pediatric age group are subject to automatic dose adjustment of the dose of radiopharmaceuticals during the PET examination.

BEFORE EXAM

Consider these preparation tips prior to the exam:

Please make every effort to keep your appointment. If you must cancel or reschedule, notify us at least 24 hours in advance. The radioactive substance used for your scan is prepared specifically for you and will have to be discarded if you fail to keep your appointment.
Routine medications may be taken, unless you have been instructed otherwise. If you are diabetic, just inform us, you will be given specific instructions before your examination.
Dont't eat anything after 22:00 on one day before the date of your appointment..
Avoid strenous activity or exercise for 24 hours prior to the appointment.
Eat nothing for four hours before the appointment time. No gum. No coffee or other drinks. You are encouraged to drink plain water (no flavors) as much as you like until the time of the scan, unless specified by your other providers.
Please dress comfortably. You may be asked to change into a patient gown that is provided for you. You can lock up all personal belongings.
Please remove all piercings and leave all jewelry at valuables at home.

DURING EXAM

The duration of the exam will vary, but the average is about 2-4 hours. You will sit or lie down on a comfortable chair or bed for approximately 1 hour while the substance travels throughout your body. You can watch TV or read book during this period. You can take cellphone inside, but talking not recomended unless it is important.

Then the technologist will position you on the PET/CT scan table, and give you instructions to remain still for 30 minutes.

Commonly, contrast is injected into a vein to better define the images throughout the body.

AFTER EXAM

Once the total scan has been performed, you may resume daily activity. Even though the substance will quickly leave your body, you can expedite the process by drinking plenty of water after your scan is complete.

The reading physician will contact your referring physician to communicate all pertinent information from your scan. Then your referring physician will contact you during 3 work-days to share the results.
